Sigur Rós have announced a return to Australia for May 2025, plotting their first-ever run of shows with symphony orchestras. The Orchestral Tour, which the band announced earlier this year with shows in the US and through Nordic parts of Europe, will arrive locally next year for the Icelandic trio’s first Australian shows in nearly three years. The complete tour schedule, as well as pre-sale and ticketing information, can be found below.
For each show, the band will be joined by a different symphony orchestra to perform orchestral interpretations of their back catalogue – including their most recent studio album, 2023’s Átta. The orchestra in question will correllate with the city the band are performing in – the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for their Adelaide date, for example, and the Brisbane Philarmonic Orchestra for the band’s show at the Concert Hall of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).
Sigur Rós – ‘Sæglópur’
Although dates have been confirmed for Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane, a three-date run in Sydney will go on sale at a later date at a to-be-confirmed venue. Given the timeframe within which Sigur Rós are visiting, one would have to have a fairly vivid imagination to guess where they will be performing for their Sydney shows. With any luck, some light will be shone on the matter soon.
Sigur Rós last toured Australia in August 2022. In a review of their opening night at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, Music Feeds praised the performance as “a showcase of the band at their brightest and most triumphant”.
“It may have been five years since they were here, but if you’ve ever loved this band for even a moment in your life it will all come flooding back to you once they’re leaping forth again into the great unknown in front of you,” the review read. “Hell, even if you came in tonight completely blind with no context whatsoever, you will be leaving a devotee. Such is the power of Sigur Rós – then, now and forever.”
