Two of rock music’s preeminent frontmen have blown thousands of minds by teaming up to deliver a surprise set during New York City’s monster Global Citizen charity festival this weekend.
Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Coldplay’s Chris Martin hit the stage together for a brief and unexpected three-song set, which included a cover of iconic Aussie band Crowded House’s classic Don’t Dream It’s Over, featuring Martin on piano and Vedder on guitar, with both of the singers sharing lead vocal duties (as well as a few good laughs).
They also took on Bluesfest 2017 artist Patti Smith’s People Have The Power and Pearl Jam’s iconic Nothingman during the short-but-sweet set.
And if that wasn’t rad enough, pro-surfer Kelly Slater introduced the whole thing.
Global Citizen festival was also packing plenty of other truly huge performances from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Major Lazer, Metallica and Rihanna, who was there spruiking her new role as ambassador for former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s Global Partnership for Education (GPE).
GPE, Global Citizen fest and all the stars in attendance – including Australia’s very own J-Gill, who was there to introduce Rihanna to the stage – are supporting the cause of helping the most vulnerable children on the planet gain access to education.
Chris Martin is also the festival’s creative director.
