Watch: Muse New Single ‘Madness’ Lyric Video

Muse have certainly caused plenty of commotion with the songs so far lifted from their soon-to-be-released 6th studio album The 2nd Law. First there was the Olympic theme song Survival, which drew a strong response from listeners, who were deeply divided in regards to their reception of the track.

Then followed the curveball known as Unsustainable; the Skrillex-inspired song slapped with the dubstep sticker and again leaving fans in befuddlement as to what exactly they can expect from the overall sound of The 2nd Law.

Now Muse strikes again with the third taste from The 2nd Law, albeit the first official single, Madness. As with Survival, Matthew Bellamy offers up some easily memorised lyrics, whether that’s for better or worse is up to you, while musically keeping things pretty subdued and electronic beat driven until the cinematic crescendo to close.

Triple j has already posted numerous reactions to the new single, with listeners once again torn on whether or not Muse’s new direction is working:

“Flashes of brilliance, but I’m starting to doubt bellamys songwriter ability…”

“Muses new stuff is so bad it is making their good stuff from the back catalogue unlistenable. Should have quit an album or two ago.”

“Loving the muse it’s m m m m mad”

Regardless of fan’s reactions, Muse drummer Dominic Howard has said that The 2nd Law “opened up doors to the future” for the band.

“Every time you finish a new album you feel excited and nervous and anxious about what’s going to happen with it when it gets released,” Howard told NME, “but with this one we’ve discovered some new ideas for our band. Every album for me seems to open up doors to the future and this one does more than ever.”
