Watch The White Stripes’ Live ‘From The Basement’ Session From 2005

The White Stripes‘ 2005 live session for web series From the Basement has been made available to stream on YouTube for the first time. The performance was uploaded to the band’s YouTube channel earlier today.

Originally broadcast in November 2005, just a few months after the band released fifth studio album Get Behind Me Satan, the session appeared as part of the first ever episode of the series. It’s the first time the entire performance has been made available in full.

The six-song set sees Jack and Meg White performing Get Behind Me Satan cuts ‘Blue Orchid’, ‘Forever For Her (Is Over for Me)’, ‘As Ugly As I Seem’, ‘Little Ghost’ and ‘Red Rain’. It also includes the band’s cover of Captain Beefheart’s 1974 track ‘Party of Special Things to Do’. They originally released their version of the song as a 7″ single back in 2000 alongside renditions of two other Beefheart songs – ‘China Pig’ and ‘Ashtray Heart’.

It’s not the first time the long-defunct duo have shared archival footage in the last year. Back in April of 2020, high-quality footage of the band performing fan favourite ‘Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground’ at Coachella back in 2003 emerged following its inclusion in the festival doco 20 Years in the Desert.

A couple months later in June, early footage of the Stripes playing ‘Death Letter’ at a show in 2000 was released by Third Man Records as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for the band’s sophomore album, De Stijl.
