A note discovered in the wallet of Kurt Cobain at the time of his death, not released until now, is sure to incite further fascination about his contentious marriage to Courtney Love, as the scrawled message takes aim at the Hole singer and mocks the couple’s wedding vows.
Seattle authorities claim the note, obtained by CBS via a public information request, was found in Cobain’s wallet following his April 5th, 1994 suicide. It was logged into evidence days later in the Seattle Police Department case file, and never made public.
“Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your Lawful Shredded wife,” it begins, “even when she’s a bitch with zits and siphoning all yr money for doping and whoring.” The photocopied paper cuts off the rest of the scrawling words at that point. The note was written on stationary from the Phoenix Hotel of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighbourhood, which fosters a reputation, both then and now, as being popular with rock ‘n’ roll clientele.
While the message is not dated or signed, according to CBS, the handwriting bears a striking similarity to that of the other note from the death scene, previously determined to be Cobain’s handwritten suicide note. Even though the sentiment and tone of each are very starkly different.
The release of the note comes as Seattle police announced their decision to review internal files regarding the Nirvana frontman’s death in anticipation of the 20-year-anniversary which occurred at the beginning of the month.
As part of that process, the Seattle Police Department released dozens of never-before-seen police photos from the scene where Cobain’s body was found, and additionally on Monday, a detective’s full report on the re-examination of the suicide file.
The re-examination further confirmed the King County Medical Examiner’s original determination that Cobain’s death was a suicide, concluding that three days before his death Cobain himself bought the shells for the shotgun that he used to shoot himself, after taking what would have otherwise been a lethal dose of heroin.
Speculation and questions surrounding the circumstances of Cobain’s death have endured for 20 years, with many theorists harping on the insinuation that Love was somehow directly responsible. The release of this note will surely fan that flame, the timing of it especially apt considering Love has just released a new solo song called Wedding Day.
