10 years ago five teens released one of the most energetic and engaging debuts this country has seen, and now someone is finally trying to get justice for them.
There’s a campaign to get Operator Please‘s ‘Just A Song About Ping Pong’ into triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2017, with an event on Facebook, created by Aussie meme page ‘I saw a UFO and nobody believes meme’, starting to gain traction.
Operator Please broke up in 2011 after their second album Gloves, but it seems they haven’t been forgotten, with the creators of the campaign calling them “objectively the greatest band in the world.”
We hate to burst everyone’s bubble, but there’s literally no way that ‘Just A Song About Ping Pong’ will appear on the Hottest 100 of 2017, as it wasn’t released this year, but the campaign’s organisers are remaining optimistic.
“As for it’s ineligibility, if we all vote for it they have to include it in the countdown, pretty sure it’s against the law if they don’t,” they wrote on Facebook.
The song has also already appeared in the Hottest 100 in 2007, coming in at a very respectable #27. Operator Please also had another songs ‘Get What You Want’ come in at $77. Still, they haven’t claimed that number one spot, so maybe this is their big chance?!
This isn’t the first campaign that’s tried get a song with zero shot of getting into the countdown into the Hottest 100. There was a big push for Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ to make it into the countdown, and it would’ve if it weren’t disqualified because KFC threw their weight behind it.
