Kiwi five-piece Shapeshifter are gearing up for some genre-bending dancefloor action as their impending Australian tour beckons.
The acclaimed outfit will be touring Stars their first new album in five years and a record that traverses the themes of love, loss and the afterlife, all elements that Shapeshifter incorporate in their unique live show.
“The essence of Shapeshifter live is that we are completely 100% un-sequenced – no laptop click track. We play ‘off the grid’ using analogue and digital synthesisers,” explains Shapeshifter’s Sam Trevethick.
Doing so means Shapeshifter have created a sound distinctive to them, one that melds drum & bass with driving guitar-driven melodies and pulsating electronic soundscapes. So, in preparation for the upcoming tour (details below) we asked Shapeshifter to tell us their top five tips for dancefloor domination.
1. Mix it up.
Something old, something new, something heavy, something blue. We try and mix up new songs with classics, some heavier tracks as well as deep ones.
If you aren’t putting your heart and soul into it on stage then the audience won’t either. Always give 100% to the crowd and they will give 100% back.
Digsss has a mic but it’s not just for singing. Talking to the crowd and encouraging them to take care of each other, and speaking personally to them is an important part of a Shapeshifter show.
4. Keep it live.
Five live musicians mean that a Shapeshifter set is different from a standard DJ set. While we rehearse (of course!) we still have the freedom to make every show unique.
5. Drums, drums drums drums.
Dance floors are all about grooves and we are lucky to have one of the best in the business in Darren, laying down the beats and slowly turning his drumsticks into sawdust.
