The frontman of much-hyped shoegaze revivalists DIIV, Zachary Cole Smith, and his girlfriend, indie pop starlet Sky Ferreira, were arrested in Saugerties, New York, last Friday night after being caught by the po-po while allegedly in possession of drugs.
According to the Daily Freeman, the couple were pulled over “after the driver made several vehicle and traffic infractions.” The cops then found that the plates on the truck were stolen and that Smith, who was driving, had an outstanding warrant for vehicle and traffic offense and was wanted by the Duchess County Sheriff’s Office.
28-year-old Smith was reportedly found with a plastic bag containing 42 decks of heroin and was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of stolen property and one count of aggravated unlicensed driving. 21-year-old Ferreira was allegedly found with ecstasy and arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
The musical duo were taken to Ulster County jail and subsequently released on bail, with DIIV playing at New York’s BasilicaSoundScape festival the following day. Smith tweeted to followers that they shouldn’t necessarily make judgments until more details come to light, saying, “What you’re reading is a police blotter, not the outcome of a court case. These cops wanted to fuck us, and they did. Sky did nothing wrong.”
It’s yet to be seen if this will effect Zachary Cole Smith’s ability to get a visa, with DIIV scheduled to head Down Under to play the Big Day Out next January.
