Ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, currently fronting his eponymous outfit Newsted, has confirmed he will be bringing his new act to Australia as part of the Soundwave 2014 lineup.
Speaking with May The Rock Be With You, Jason first confirmed that Newsted would be making their Australian debut in “the third week of February 2014”, which the interviewer noted “sound a lot like Soundwave time”. “It sure does,” shot back Newsted.
He then went on to confirm his involvement with the festival when talking about how the success of the outfit’s brand-new album Heavy Metal Music will affect their ability to play bigger and better gigs:
“Hoping the record does even better and then I get a little leverage for offers for the band for live performances, obviously the Soundwave one was appropriate and we’ve already agreed to that. We got Japan shows I think are going to follow the Australian shows.”
Newsted quit Metallica in 2001 after friction between him and frontman James Hetfield came to a head concerning Newsted’s side project, Echobrain. The bassist left the band just as they were about to hit the studio for their eighth studio album, St Anger.
Newsted are the first band to officially confirm their involvement with Soundwave 2014, though there are a bunch of highly likely contenders and hot tips from promoter AJ Maddah. Get keen for the full lineup, coming in just “a few days”.
