Pearl Jam Played ‘Angel’ For The First Time In 22 Years Over The Weekend

Pearl Jam have played their 1993 Christmas single Angel for the first time in 22 years over the weekend.

The band played Colorado’s Ride Festival and decided to drop the song, which they’ve only played live five times ever.

“Some of you may know that this next song doesn’t get played much and some of you may not,” frontman Eddie Vedder told the crowd before playing the song, as Stereogum reports.

“It was written by the guy who was our drummer, Dave Abbruzzese. We wish him well.”

Abbruzzese was fired from the band in 1994 just months before their third album Vitalogy. There were creative and personality differences between he and the rest of the band. Bassist Jeff Ament said, “He was more comfortable being a rock star than the rest of us.”

On top of Angel, the band also played Society for the first time as a full band. Society was recorded by Vedder for the In The Wild soundtrack and according to a Pearl Jam forum it was requested by a local before the show.

A fan caught their performance of Angel on camera and you can watch it in full below. Also check out the full setlist from the two-and-a-half hour performance.
