Triple J Closed The Hottest 200 With A Smash Mouth Song, And The Internet Loved It

Triple j has jumped on the meme train with a little help from Smash Mouth, after dropping a surprise track by the Californian meme band to close out yesterday’s Hottest 200 countdown.

It all went down at around 5pm AEDT, after a bunch of triple j listeners had requested Smash Mouth’s meme-hit ‘All Star’ while the station was counting down the 100 songs which didn’t make its Hottest 100 countdown from last week.

After playing the song ‘Chlorine’ by Newcastle punks Trophy Eyes at #101 on the Hottest 200, triple j gave in to the pressure and released the meme valves — and here’s proof, direct from the forever-scarred triple j website:

After ‘All Star’ finished playing and we all took the Ls off our foreheads, word of the song’s appearance so close to the Hottest 200 made its way around the interwebs, and punters reacted (largely) with glee:

This wasn’t the first time triple j has played a Smash Mouth song over its airways; one of the band’s other hit songs, ‘Walkin’ On The Sun’, made it to #11 on the Hottest 100 back in 1997, beating out the likes of Silverchair’s ‘Freak’, Foo Fighters’ ‘Monkey Wrench’ and The Living End’s ‘Prisoner of Society’.

Yup.

So it seems the Smash Mouth memes aren’t going away anytime soon, which is fine; That’s the way we like it, and we never get bored.
