Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar have kicked started the 2016 BET Awards in the most appropriately awesome way possible – appearing on stage at the Microsoft Theatre for a performance alongside Beyoncé’s backup dancers for the hugely anthemic tune Freedom.
Backed by bursts of emotive red lights and plumes of smoke, the two show very little regard for the code of the ocean as they kick, stomp and splash through a flooded stage. Though so far there’s no footage of the crowd response during the performance, judging by their stage energy alone, this was sure to have the whole damn room up and moving.
Beyoncé is up for a total of five BET Awards including, but not limited to, Best Female R&B, Pop Artist and Video of the Year for the official Formation video – Ooft, imagine going up against that tonight – which was one of the many shining jewels form her recent audio/visual rollercoaster journey through the mind of Beyoncé, Lemonade.
Kendrick isn’t too far off with a few cool noms for himself including Best Video for Alright and Best Male Hip Hop Artist.
