Watch Laura Jane Grace Burn Her Birth Certificate In Protest On Stage In North Carolina

Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace promised that she would stick it to the makers of North Carolina’s Transphobic bathroom bill, and stick it to them she did. At the band’s latest show in the state, the singer/songwriter burned her birth certificate on stage, sending a clear message to the lawmakers.

Taking to Motorco Music Hall over the weekend, Grace pulled her birth certificate, followed by a lighter, letting the damned thing burn. She farewelled it with a “Goodbye, gender!” as it disappeared into smoke. Grace stood by her promise to fans, as reported by Buzzfeed, to “create an event around the show as a form of protest to say that despite whatever stupid laws they enact, trans people are not going to be scared, they are not going away.”

You can watch the sacrificial burning below, filmed by a fan at the show.

Grace now joins a rapidly growing list of musicians and entertainment people to slam the state for its hugely out of touch HB2 law, or Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act which prohibits transgender people from visiting certain bathrooms.

Father John Misty and Against Me! Have donated profits from their shows to various charities for LGBTQ people, while Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, and Pearl Jam cancelled their shows.
