The Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala Says They’re Returning With “New Shit, New People, Left Turns”

Just a couple of days ago we received confirmation that a The Mars Volta reunion was definitely on the cards. Cedric Bixler-Zavala had been dropping hints around Twitter that there was potential for a comeback… but then things hit fever pitch when a fan tweeted, “I dream with you guys giving TMV a new chapter” and Bixler-Zavala replied: “It’s happening.”

A second Bixler-Zavala tweet heavily implied that he and Omar Rodríguez-López were in the studio together. Music news publications went nuts (duh) and their comeback plans went viral. So, Bixler-Zavala jumped back on Twitter to give us a little more insight, as reported by Consequence Of Sound.

“What it’s NOT going to be is your ‘fav member lineup’ playing their ‘classic records’ in full etc. Maybe we’ll play old shit, who knows how we feel,” he began in a since deleted follow-up tweet.

“Just remember our past campaigns never relied on playing requests or going fully backwards …it’s new shit, new people, left turns , tangent inconsistencies, mazapan dreams and churro wishes.

“I will say this though, when ORL played me a grip of new shit I fucking cried. Like Claire Daines in Romeo & Juliet cried. Yeah it was fucking weird. It’s in its infancy right now. No deadlines, no ball tripping, no drama, just 2 grown ass men using essential oils and bold new perfumes shooting ideas and scooting their ass across the fucking lawn trying to get rid of these worms.”

We haven’t had new tunes from Mars Volta since 2012 when they released Noctourniquet. This was a year prior to the falling out of Bixler-Zavala and Rodríguez-López and the (temporary) end of The Mars Volta.

More to come, we’re sure.
