Madonna’s New ‘God Control’ Video Is A Protest Against Gun Violence

Madonna has released the Jonas Åkerlund-directed music video for ‘God Control’, a track from most recent album Madame X.

The disturbing, eight-minute long video opens with a warning that “The story you are about to see is very disturbing. It shows graphic scenes of gun violence. But it’s happening everyday. And it has to stop.”

The video goes on to depict a shooting at a nightclub and its aftermath, alternating between pumping dance scenes, a violent attack, and a mass funeral. It ends by quoting American civil rights activist Dr. Angela Davis – “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept” – before calling for gun control.

“I want to draw attention through my platform as an artist to a problem in America that is out of control and is taking the lives of innocent people,” said Madonna in a press release about the video. “This crisis can end if our legislators act to change the laws that fail to protect us all.”
