From ‘MMMBop’ to ‘HMMMBop’. Zac Hanson of the brother band trio has had to make a public apology after fans discovered his now-deleted Pinterest account. While most people are creating mood boards on the social site, the band’s drummer Zac had been curating boards of pro-gun, transphobic, racist memes.
The Pinterest account was leaked online and Vice launched an investigation into it. A 35-year-old Zac Hanson later confirmed the account, that went by the username Commanding Officer, was his.
The memes shared are all pretty gross and somehow all link racist and transphobic opinions to gun laws.
In an Instagram comment which was posted to Reddit, a fan asks Zac if the rest of his fans know, labelling him disgusting.
Hanson replies saying it was a joke. “The joke [is] about how we should see other men… It’s a joke… maybe it’s in bad taste, a lot of comedy is.”
“Yes she’s putting him down, cause she’s hardcore. It’s the woman that ‘gun guys’ daydream about.”
Anyway, Zac then emailed Vice.
“The leaked Pinterest page provided a distorted view of the issues surrounding race and social justice, which do not reflect my personal beliefs,” he said.
“I apologise for the hurt my actions caused.”
It’s the latest in what Reddit users are calling HansonGate. You can find an explainer thread on HansonGate here.
Back in June, fans called Hanson out for neglecting to share anything around Black Lives Matter and continuing to avoid the subject. They later posted about George Floyd two weeks after his death.
