PREMIERE: Composer Sarah Elise Thompson’s Delicate New Single ‘pink salt’

Sydney-based composer and producer Sarah Elise Thompson is set to release her new single ‘pink salt’ on Thursday, 7th October. We’re premiering it here on Music Feeds.

‘pink salt’ follows last month’s ‘sanddollar’, a delightful instrumental piece composed in a practice room at the San Francisco Conservatory in January 2020 and performed by American percussionist Matthew Stiens.

‘pink salt’ is similarly graceful and delicate, while also carrying a grounding weight. ‘pink salt’ is built around strong piano chords, which provide a foundation for occasional trills and glissandi. Thompson, who studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with composer Gerard Brophy, wanted ‘pink salt’ to echo the sound of ocean swells in her hometown on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The instrumental recording spotlights the playing of Chinese-born American pianist Huizi Zhang. Much like ‘sanddollar’, ‘pink salt’ comes with an artfully directed music video. This one features dancer Chloe Young (Sydney Dance Company) performing on a beach with the purple and orange sea and sky behind her.

‘pink salt’ is the second single lifted from Thompson’s upcoming debut albumself centre, which is set for release in November 2021. Thompson’s compositions have previously been performed in such prestigious venues as the Sydney Opera House, the Melbourne Recital Centre and New York’s Carnegie Hall.
