Review: SURES – The Night, Hero, Waste, Time, Getting Better EP

The title of the new EP from Sydney’s SURES, The Night, Hero, Waste, Time, Getting Better EP, is a mouthful. Taking its name from the songs it contains, the EP itself is far easier to consume, serving up five loud, joyous and explosive indie dream pop tunes.

Dripping with delay, synth and reverb effects, the genesis of The Night Hero Waste Time Getting Better EP is found in the recent resurgence of guitar-driven surf rock, and the influence of acts such as Surfer Blood, Wavves and Smith Westerns on this release is ever apparent.

Each track on the EP offers something different, from the synth-soaked soundscape of Waste, which almost sounds like an M83 song, to the far more poppy Night, which features a catchy guitar riff and a memorable solo, something often lacking in music on radio today.

The more downbeat Getting Better, which closes out the EP, is a highlight, transitioning from a harmonious, soft intro to a casual instrumental jam. None of the tracks feel overproduced – a sign either of the DIY aesthetics of the band, or perhaps more of a logistical reality – and they are all fresh, raw and interesting.

The most encouraging aspect is the continuity between the tracks; it feels like a complete piece of music. SURES haven’t fallen into the trap of recording a short release containing one good song and whatever else they had lying around thrown in. The title of the EP lets the songs speak for themselves, and they speak volumes. There’s more than enough here to sink your teeth into, suggesting SURES have got some treats in store further down the menu when they’re ready to serve the main course.
