Soon the pointless but infinitely hopeful task of charging your phone for a couple of minutes before you head back out won’t be so pointless. The Focus Forward Filmmaker Competition, sponsored by GE, has produced some seriously thought-provoking stuff this year. Putting a key emphasis on innovative qualities, and the people who possess them, the overall prize isn’t just a cool $200,000 but also the peace of mind knowing that you have changed the world.
Shortlisted as one of the finalists for the competition from a pool of 30 3-minute long films, The Super Supercapacitor is an obvious stand-out given the implications this discovery will have on future technology and environmental sustainability. Directed by Brian Golden Davis, the short film documents the discovery of a new process for making graphene, the thinnest and strongest material on earth.
After somewhat of a miraculous accident, researchers discovered the potential for graphene to charge and discharge energy, like, way faster than any battery. The super supercapacitor will be able to charge your smartphone in “30 seconds or a minute” and then you’re good to go. Your electric car could be hooked up and roughly within the same timeframe will be totally charged.
On top of this, once the graphene has served its purpose, because it’s carbon-based, it will effortlessly decompose in your garden.
