Rowena Wise Signs to Beloved Recordings, Releases ‘Nobody’s Saviour’

Melbourne/Naarm singer-songwriter Rowena Wise is the latest act to sign to Beloved Recordings, a Naarm-based independent label that launched earlier in 2023. Wise’s partnership with Beloved begins with the single ‘Nobody’s Saviour’, which is out now. The song comes with a video directed by musician Didirri and shot on Kodak Super 8 film. Watch that below.

‘Nobody’s Saviour’ is a quiet, elegant indie folk song that reflects on one’s powerlessness to rescue a loved one without their cooperation. “I think love can make you stand too close to the painting to see it for what it is,” Wise said in a statement. “I’ve learnt the hard way that you can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved, and you can’t love someone else if you don’t love yourself.”

Rowena Wise – ‘Nobody’s Saviour’

Rowena Wise has been releasing music for the last half-decade, initially under the artist name Ro. She’s performed at Woodford Folk Festival, BIGSOUND and Party in the Paddock and supported the likes of G Flip, Didirri, Kira Puru, Little May and Bernard Fanning.

Wise envisioned the Didirri-directed video for ‘Nobody’s Saviour’ as a riff on the theme of self-sacrifice. “We wanted to make something that looked striking, and there’s a raw and nostalgic feel to Super 8 film that suits the organic feeling of ‘Nobody’s Saviour’,” she said.

Wise added, “There’s something very anti-hero about a human sacrifice – it’s glorious but also ultimately pointless. This aligned with the sentiment of the song.” Follow Wise here.
