Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.
In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.
Maribou State — ‘Untrue’ by Burial
Untrue,
A decade ago, sat in ‘Near Dark’ in the icy glaze of the old conservatory of my parent’s bungalow, I remember the first moment you imbued the room with your presence. Like a ‘Shell of Light’ off the back of an ‘Archangel’s’ wing, you gracefully presented yourself that cold night. In that old conservatory of my parent’s bungalow, you opened my mind to a new alluring rhythm, a new beat that pulsed through my veins like a rush of ‘Endorphins’ to the head, an ‘Untitled’ lust for something new.
The opulence of your very being would make even a night spent ‘Homeless’, in a ‘Dog Shelter’ or even ‘In McDonalds’ an attractive venture. It’s not ‘Untrue’ that in my formative years, I was a ‘Raver’. Gorging on what felt like the ‘UK’s’ ever-giving nightlife; an exhibition of solidarity. And upon returning home, to that old conservatory of my parent’s bungalow, you provided warmth and protection, like a soothing ‘Ghost [in the] Hardware’
You’re forever ‘Etched’ into my ‘Headplate’.
With Love,
Maribou State
