Love Letter To A Record: Sunrose On Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’

Written by Sunrose on January 25, 2019

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Sunrose – Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd

Dark Side Of The Moon, you’ve been the light leading us when sunlight has failed to reach us, through a path of analysation, understanding, confusion and euphoria. You’ve been the background music through late night psychedelic sessions of sexual exploration, penetrating consciousness and unravelling the universe within.

The songs have triggered hallucinogenic time warps overcoming and immobilising us as listeners and leaving us with no choice but to surrender to your (vastness) sonic voyage. Dark Side was the gateway LP that sent us spiralling through the rabbit hole listening to LP after LP, exploring the cosmic web that’s been intricately spun through the decades.

Each member of Floyd has acted as a teacher to us. Gilmour taught us patience, note selection and the importance of space between notes. Rick opened our minds to inversions and complimenting part writing that supports the bigger picture. Waters demonstrates a grandiose and anthemic approach to songwriting and the powerful use of dynamics that has inspired us. While Mason exhibits a strange and unique drumming style verging on either madness or genius.

Sunrose has united in the past through learning and reinterpreting the best songs of Floyd and continue to do so.

Sunrose’s new single ‘Too High To Say Hello’, taken from their forthcoming new EP, is out now. Listen here.
