Love Letter To A Record: The Casanovas’ Tommy Boyce On AC/DC’s ‘If You Want Blood You’ve Got It’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Tommy Boyce, The Casanovas – ‘If You Want Blood You’ve Got It’ By AC/DC (1978)

Dear If You Want Blood You’ve Got It,

I’ll never forget the day you came into my life. My older brother introduced me to you in our lounge room when I was but a ten year old boy. Whilst I’d had so much fun with previous flings like KISS Alive, I’d never been all the way with an album before.

That day I knew… I had to have you.

You gave me goosebumps from your opening moments…. the roar of the crowd and the hum of the amps giving way to Angus’s opening chords of ‘Riff Raff’. Nothing could have prepared me for the brutal perfection of the riff as the band kicked in though…. you penetrated me so deep. You took control and had your way with me whether I liked it or not…. but I did, so it was ok….. in fact it was pure ecstasy.

As soon as Bon started singing I knew that you didn’t bother with contraception and during the verses of ‘The Jack’ I pretty much knew you were giving me a venereal disease but even then I still felt it was worth it. I still have the disease and though it’s a bit of work managing it at times I wear it as a badge of honour.

That day I knew…. I had to have you.

You shook me all night long even though you hadn’t even written that song yet. Your tight-as-fuck, oh so in-the-pocket grooves had me screaming for mercy and yet I wanted more….. you gave it to me… hard and fast without apology.

You brought me to the zenith of my bliss during the end of ‘Let There Be Rock’ and, afterwards, instead of holding me tenderly and whispering sweet nothings, you got up during ‘Rocker’, threw me a towel and told me to clean up and get out. I was a quivering mess but I obeyed and I loved you for it and always will.

Forever yours,

Tommy
