Love Letter To A Record: Totally Unicorn On Frenzal Rhomb’s ‘Not So Tough Now’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Drew Gardner, Totally Unicorn – Frenzal Rhomb, Not So Tough Now

My dearest Not So Tough Now,

I was gonna call but thought this best be in writing.

I don’t remember the exact date I laid my eyes on you first, it was either in my best friend Trent’s Super Bass Discman in year 10 or while I ate my bowl of Corn Flakes while watching Recovery on Saturday morning.

I had to ask you out to be mine! So I got the first bus into Crown Central Wollongong and ran like Matt Shirvington to Redback Music.

I always thought my one true love would be an exotic foreigner as that’s where my ears were always attracted. But you opened them up and showed me that love was in fact right there in my own back yard.

We would hang out for months on end in my room together and even in my brother’s Datsun. I would show you off to all my friends, even the ones who said you weren’t “their type”, but I never felt threatened. I was always willing to share.

You taught me to care about what’s going on around me, about politics and that it was ok to be me. I even stopped eating McDonald’s for like 2 months! The only thing that kept me from marrying you was all the secrets you had in the end. 35 secrets is sometimes just too much…

Not So Tough Now, even though we don’t see each other that much since you moved to San Souci, from time to time I’ll bump into you late at a party while Shaneo has his iPhone plugged into the stereo and it will always bring a smile to my face, while someone punches it.
