Music Feeds Faves – 01/09/17

The Music Feeds team is ready to wax lyrical about tunes we’re digging and show how ~cool~ we are when dropping that new music knowledge. Here we’ve wrangled together the fresh new songs that made an impact on us these past few weeks, for the ultimate new music playlist. It’s Music Feeds Faves!

Vallis Alps – Oceans

Frequent visitors to the MF Faves corner Vallis Alps are at it again with this morning’s surprise new track ‘Oceans’, another beautiful song from the Sydney duo. There’s a lightness to the production of ‘Oceans’ that makes it instantly uplifting, its beats bouncing around almost effervescently, surrounding Parissa Tosif’s gentle and warm vocals. Still, don’t let the weightlessness of the production belie the depth behind ‘Oceans’ – the track being inspired by Táhirih, a 19th-century poet and theologian who fought and died for the emancipation of women in Iran.

Says the band, their conversations about Táhirih “led us to think about the daily sacrifices that women make in the fight for equality and we wanted to write a song about carrying that weight and thriving in spite of it. As Oceans formed, it became both a celebration and an expression of admiration for those figures in our lives and in history that are examples of this.”

The Dead Love – ‘Sugercoat’

Sydney grungerats The Dead Love are back with a new tune that’s making all kind of waves, including the air kind. The trio’s Weezer-vibin’ newbie ‘Sugercoat’ has just cracked triple J rotation and let me be the first to say:

It’s about bloody time these legends copped some mainstream recognition in their own backyard after years of churning out top notch tunes, and this one’s a prime example of the kind of punch-you-in-the-dick songwriting, blistering guitars, huge hooks and no-bullshit lyrics that we’ve come to dead(set) love from these brilliant unshaven riff-bags. Also FYI frontman Stevie Knight has his producer fingers all over half the bands on next year’s UNIFY Gathering lineup so it’s no wonder his own tunes are so damn fire. / Emmy Mack, Senior Staff Writer

Father John Misty – ‘Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution’ (The Haxan Cloak Remix)

When I woke up this morning, I never suspected I was about to witness experimental British producer The Haxan Cloak (Bobby Krlic) drop a remix of Father John Misty’s operatic allegory about the state of the planet, ‘Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution’.

Sharing the remix on socials today, Krlic told fans that his dark reworking of the Josh Tillman track is a result of “The Night Josh Tillman came to MY Apartment”, which sounds like an amazing title for a book.

Pairing Tillman’s original vocals with a typically haunting combination of beeps, bells, drones, sub bass and strings, Krlic somehow creates something that’s even more guilt-inducing than the original, and that’s why I love it.

The remix even has its own music video (created by Matthew Daniel Siskin), which switches between footage of climate change, TV commercials, food production, music festival crowds and even a snippet of a recent Tillman interview — because meta-ness is everything. / Tom Williams, News Editor
