Music Feeds Podcast Episode #54 – Born Ruffians

Canadian indie rock trio Born Ruffians will be hitting our shores soon for their third trip as a band, playing Falls Festival and their own headlining dates armed with new record Birthmarks. Lead vocalist Luke Lalonde took some well-earned downtime in a Toronto coffee shop and called in to chat to the velvet-lunged Mike Hohnen for the latest instalment of Music Feeds Podcast.

The frontman shows no signs of slowing down, telling Music Feeds that aside from preparing for their imminent trip, he been working on some b-sides from Birthmarks as well as an acoustic EP he’s hoping to release for free.

“The EP that I’m working on is mostly songs from Birthmarks that are reimagined or reworked in an acoustic way, with other instruments like mandolin and stuff like that,” he said. “So that’s just like working on the songs with different arrangements.”

While it’s a lot of work, Lalonde says making music is both labour of love and his full time job, so he always finds time. “It’s good to force yourself too,” he explains. “I think it’s good to do it as an exercise too you know to try and just write music for the sake of it. Maybe 5% will be good or useable but at least you have that 5%, you know?”

The ambitious musician also revealed he hopes to release another Born Ruffians album next year, but after spending so much time in the studio producing Birthmarks, the band want to nail a down a concept first and work from that.

“I’d really like to put out two records in two years, it’s my goal right now so I’m going to work hard and get that done,” he said.
