PREMIERE: Boy Destroy Delivers A Raw Cover Of Mallrat’s ‘Rockstar’

Swedish crooner Boy Destroy is on the cusp of releasing his new EP Warpaint, but today he’s delivering fans a sweet little surprise: a cover of Mallrat‘s 2020 smash ‘Rockstar’.

While the original sees Mallrat – real name Grace Shaw – is done in the dreamy pop haze style she’s become the master of, but Boy Destroy strips it back and makes the song raw and gritty.

“Mallrat is an artist I’ve followed for a while,” Boy Destroy said in the description of his cover on YouTube.

“I’m a 90s kid and this song ticks a lot of boxes for me. The spiteful and yet playful vibe together with the very descriptive lyrics really speak to me. I knew I had to try it from the first time I heard it.”

As for Boy Destroy’s EP, due out on Thursday, 15th April, the artist says it’s “a collection of stories from (his) sometimes troubled life.”

“It’s about our time. It’s about human beings,” he continued.

“Isolated like islands, bound together by a sick longing for connection. Self-destruction and redemption in the digital age.”
