PREMIERE: Matthew Gilbert Navigates Pain On ‘Out Of The Contempt’

‘Out Of The Contempt’ is the first taste of Getting Over All Of It, the upcoming second album from songwriter Matthew Gilbert. Music Feeds is premiering the track ahead of its official release on Thursday, 9th June.

Matthew Gilbert is a Melbourne born and bred songwriter with a penchant for heart-on-the-sleeve lyricism. His work is influenced by local acts Gang of Youths and Boy & Bear, and early period Bon Iver. Gilbert’s decision to release ‘Out Of The Contempt’ as the lead single from Getting Over All Of It was informed by the track’s thematic resonance.

“‘Out Of The Contempt’ completes the story of moving through the last five years of my life,” said Gilbert. It was a period filled with “depression, relationships, church hurt and restoring faith,” he said. With ‘Out Of The Contempt’, Gilbert vows to move on from the pain he’s experienced, “regardless of getting closure, for the sake of healing.”

Getting Over All Of It was composed and recorded during Melbourne’s stage four COVID lockdown of 2021. Jacob Sells (Woodlock, LANKS) mixed the album. It was mastered by Adam Dempsey (Courtney Barnett, Paul Kelly).

“I hope that the raw honesty of these stories will allow people to have open conversations about their own life and journey, and also provide a therapeutic soundscape to those in the midst of heartbreak, despair and depression,” said Gilbert. Listen to ‘Out Of The Contempt’ below.
