Richard In Your Mind With: Windsor Flare, The Night Terrors – The Hopetoun Hotel 22nd June 2008

Under the watchful eye of Yoda, at the charismatic Hopetoun hotel, seemed the perfect setting for a bunch of nerds to rock out on Sunday 22nd June. Windsor Flare and The Night Terrors (both from Victoria) supported Richard In Your Mind for a night of wacky sounds. The Night Terrors are an awesome three piece instrumental band, with a heavy, fat and very loud sound. They reject the idea of a singer, instead featuring synth sounds and the theremin (an electronic instrument played without even being touched) creating an eerie atmosphere. A great band to check out if you feel like discovering fucked up sounds and losing your mind just a tiny bit.

Richard In Your Mind, former Triple J Unearthed winners, were surprisingly interesting to listen to. They describe themselves as “Experimental Pop” and I couldn’t agree more. Richard are a quartet of that new breed of “Cool Nerds”, combining accessible pop structures with psychedelic outbursts. A tight and entertaining band reminiscent of Bowie, Syd Barret, and bands like Weezer and They Might Be Giants.

All together an entertaining line up, with sounds filling the half empty yet forgiving room of the Hopetoun. The bands coped well with this predicament, but would thrive on an atmospheric packed crowd.
