10 Music News Stories That Made Us Say “WTF?” In 2016

Ah, 2016. A lot of shit’s gone down in the music world this year — some of it good (like The Avalanches‘ comeback, Download Festival expanding to Australia and the memeification of Shannon Noll), and a whooooole lot more of it’s been pretty damn not good (like David Bowie and Prince dying, Matt & Alex leaving triple j, STILL no new Tool album and the continued memeification of Shannon Noll).

But that’s not what we’re here to focus on today, y’all.

We wanna shine the spotlight on some of the most wacked out music news that came out this year. The stories that made us Music Feeds folk stop and ask ourselves “are we really fkn writing about this?” The headlines that made us all raise one incredulous eyebrow, cast our eyes to the heavens, throw up our hands and bellow “WTAF?”

So, here are some of those stories for your listicle-perusing pleasure.

So long, 2016. It’s been fkn weird.

1. The Groovy Mystery Of “The Good Life Ghost”

The internet collectively crapped its pants when the organisers of Australia’s Good Life festival confirmed that a picture snapped at the Brisbane leg of the 2016 under-agers event — which appeared to show the ghostly image of a small girl holding a teddy bear — was very likely legit, and even fit with a popular urban legend about the allegedly haunted venue.

Someone call Ghost Busters, yo.

2. Virgin Australia Tells Kanye West To “Eat A Dick”

Australia’s second-largest airline caused mass anger (and LOLs) after it succinctly told global superstar Kanye West to “EAD you douche” after the rap dynamo chastised Pitchfork mag for giving his album The Life Of Pablo a measly 9/10 review. The tweet was deleted soon after, but its wondrous legacy remains.

3. ’80s Child Star Corey Feldman’s Bizarre Musical Resurgence

’80s icon and star of such films as The Goonies and The Lost Boys, Corey Feldman, sparked mass confusion when he delivered an inexplicable and truly bizarre performance on America’s Today Show to promote his new album Angelic 2 The Core.

The oddball recital featured Feldman donning a grim reaper outfit and busting out some Michael Jackson-inspired dance moves backed by his band of scantily clad “angels”, whose uber-suss backstory made the whole thing seem even more of a express trip to bonkersville.

Anyway, it had the internet asking whether C-Feld was either an eccentric weirdo Charles Manson/Hugh Hefner/Charlie Sheen/MJ type hybrid, or else an ingenious internet troll. The jury, friends, is still out, even after Feldman returned to the Today Show for round two.

4. Stoner Successfully Mass-Dupes Fans Into Believing Limp Bizkit Are Playing A Surprise Gig At A US Servo

Whoever said stoners lack motivation? One weed enthusiast organised a hoax Facebook event back in April, spruiking a free Limp Bizkit show at a local Ohio service station in honour of international 4/20 day, to which hundreds of Nookie lovers rocked up chanting “We want Fred!”, because they still had faith (faith faith) that the gig wasn’t total BS (it was). Yep, some men just want to watch the world burn.

5. Insane Clown Posse Fan Charged After Cutting Off Woman’s Finger & Drinking Her Blood In Bizarre Ritual

This one’s just classic 2016. Back in September, a crazed Insane Clown Posse fan (or “juggalo”) was charged after allegedly cutting off a woman’s pinky finger with a machete, slicing open her arm and drinking her blood in a warped bid to memorialise a fellow ICP fan who died last year. Court documents reveal even more gruesome details about the gory memorial. As if we didn’t have enough evil clowns to worry about already this year. Thanks, 2016.
