Against Me! Secretly Share ‘New Wave’-Era Rarity ‘Merchandise’

Against Me! have shared a new song from the band’s New Wave era (around 2007), with the band’s Laura Jane Grace uploading the track – entitled ‘Merchandise’ – to Soundcloud under the name ‘Angela Baker’ late last week.

“This is SOOOOO messed up! This band sounds EXACTLY like Against Me! circa 2007,” joked Grace on Twitter. “Wtf?!? I’m SOOOO pissed off. Who is this Angela Baker?”

Clocking in at just over the two-minute mark, it’s a short, punchy burst of punk rock that’s definitely very reminiscent of the band’s fourth studio album.

Replying to fans, Grace revealed that the song was performed by the band’s New Wave-era lineup of guitarist James Bowman, bassist Andrew Seward and drummer Warren Oakes (“Weird right? Even sounds like James singing backing vocals and Warren playing drums and Andrew playing bass.”)

Grace also slyly confirmed that the track was recorded by New Wave producer Butch Vig – “Eerie right? Almost sounds like it was recorded by Butch too.” – suggesting that ‘Merchandise’ was likely recorded during the same sessions as the album.

There’s no word yet on whether Grace will be sharing more previously unreleased gems from the band’s archives, but fingers crossed – here’s the Angela Baker Soundcloud page just in case.

Against Me!’s last studio album was 2016’s Shape Shift with Me, although Grace released a solo album with her Devouring Mothers project called Bought to Rot back in 2018.
