Ever the renaissance man, Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons is turning his hand to the stage, by working with the Lowry Theatre in Manchester, UK on new play ‘The Life and Death Of Marina Abramovic’.
The play, directed by Robert Wilson, is a biographical piece exploring the life of the star of the title, and will feature Abramovic herself along with Willem Dafoe. Speaking to Spinner, Hegarty said, “They have an amazing arts program. It’s an ambitious theatre. She’s the premier performance artist in the world. Robert Wilson is an eminent director and artist. It’s a biographical piece on her life. It’s going to be very interesting. They asked me to write the songs for it and I’ll be performing two songs as well.”
Hegarty’s last album was Swanlights, released last October. He is yet to tour the album and is instead devoting himself to projects that span the whole spectrum of the arts. He recently collaborated with Dutch artists Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin on a short film, while he will perform at this year’s TED Conference on March 1, a get together of innovators in art, technology, business and science in Long Beach, California.
