Aussie Musos Launch National Anti-Violence Against Women Campaign

Hundreds of Australian musicians including the likes of The Grates, Courtney Barnett, Pete Murray, Urthboy, Boy & Bear and more, have leant their support to a grassroots anti-violence against women campaign, #notON.

The #notON campaign was created with White Ribbon Australia and will see prominent Australian musicians show their devotion to the cause by wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the #notON slogan as they take to stages at shows across Australia throughout April.

“As an industry with a huge fan base of young males, we are in a unique position to be able to start conversations about what is a real epidemic in our society,” said supporter Pete Murray. “This isn’t a disease that’s hard to find a cure for — it’s simply about increasing awareness and saying that we refuse to live in a society that tolerates the kind of statistics that Australians have been horrified by over the last few months.”

Such alarming statistics include the fact that on average one woman is killed every week as a result of intimate partner violence, that domestic and family violence is the main cause of homelessness for women and their children and intimate partner violence is the leading contributor to death, disability & ill-health in Australian women aged 15-44.

Not only that, but currently one in five women experience harassment within the workplace and, in terms of economics, violence against women is estimated to cost $14.4 billion to the Australian economy every year.

“We are excited to have the support of the music industry via this creative initiative,” said CEO of White Ribbon Australia Libby Davies. “It is so important to break the silence that surrounds men’s violence against women. Hearing musicians lend their voices to the campaign helps to expand the reach of our prevention work aimed at changing the attitudes and behaviours that lead to such violence.”

Other Australian artists who have pledged their support for the #notON campaign include Troy Cassar-Daley, Violent Soho, Suze de Marchi, The Basics, Dallas Frasca, Emma Louise, Airling, Bad//Dreem, Josh Pyke, Katie Noonan, The Herd, Thelma Plum and many more.
