Billie Joe Armstrong Says Green Day’s 2012 Trilogy Of Albums Had “No Direction”

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong has given a rare in-depth interview talking about addiction, entering rehab and the band’s trilogy of albums.

In 2012, Armstrong checked himself into rehab after an on-stage meltdown in the midst of dropping three albums within a year ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!.

Now, in an interview with Q, (via NME) Armstrong has admitted that, “Those records have absolutely no direction to them.”

“It was about being prolific for the sake of it. So we were just going and going and going.”

During the recording and release of those records, Armstrong was suffering from drug addiction although he’s revealed that he thought everything was “completely normal” despite it.

“The thing about someone who’s losing their mind is that they don’t know they’re losing their mind. I thought my life was completely normal,” he said.

“And it wasn’t. I was on drugs! And people aren’t acting rationally when they’re on drugs. So I had to take care of myself. I had to kick that, and I did. Then we took a long break which was totally necessary.”

It’s been four years since they released the trilogy of albums and the band are finally returning with their twelth album Revolution Radio.

The band took a two year break before starting work on the record but Armstrong’s back to being exceptionally busy. He’s also starring in a film called Ordinary World, playing an ageing punk rocker.

The band also already have a stack of tour dates booked in across America and Europe. Let’s hope Australia is on the list for a visit soon.
