Birds Of Tokyo Is The Band Spielberg Was Always Looking For

Darwin readers might’ve been miffed when Karnivool announced that they’ve been forced to pull out of their headlining spot at Bassinthegrass 2014, due to frontman Ian Kenny‘s US commitments with Birds of Tokyo, but a new film trailer says that schedule-clearing hard work is paying off.

The trailer for The Hundred-Foot Journey, an adaptation of the 2010 novel by Richard C Morais, directed by Lasse Hallström and produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, extensively features Birds of Tokyo’s 2013 hit single Lanterns from their acclaimed album March Fires.

Having your music as the backdrop to title cards bearings names like Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Helen Mirren ain’t too shabby, and as it turns out, Birds of Tokyo are actually the perfect accompaniment to a Spielberg trailer, slipping sublimely into its standard narrative format.

As far as trailers go, you’ve seen the Hundred-Foot Journey trailer a million times before. Every box is checked, from a voiceover narrator that quickly disappears without explanation, to a music-cut before a punchline to a joke that gives way to much more somber and pensive music (twice).
