A Career-Spanning Midnight Oil Documentary Is In The Works

Funding body Screen Australia has announced that a documentary about legendary Aussie rockers Midnight Oil has been commissioned for production, and is aiming for a release in 2018.

The doco’s title is Backburning, and it’s set to examine Australia over the course of Midnight Oil’s career as a band, from 1975 through to today.

“It will tell the story of Midnight Oil who, with their uncompromising attitudes, brought political awareness to their music and influenced a whole generation, making them one of the most revered, hated and storied musical acts in Australian history,” says Screen Australia in a statement.

The documentary will be written and directed by Paul Clarke, and it has been announced as part of a $4.15 million production investment by Screen Australia to help fund the creation of 15 new documentaries.

In the meantime, Midnight Oil are preparing to bring their 2017 ‘The Great Circle’ tour to Australia in October and November, as part of their first world tour in more than 25 years.
