Childish Gambino is continuing to push the envelope in weird and wonderful ways, announcing that his much-frothed over forthcoming album Awaken, My Love! will be released on “virtual reality limited edition vinyl”.
The only thing is, the artist otherwise known as Donald Glover hasn’t actually explained WTF “virtual reality vinyl” actually means. So for now, we can only assume it’ll be a groundbreaking avant-garde hybrid of vintage analogue and cutting edge digital technologies, which transports us into a new Matrix-style world of retro Funkadelic-inspired hip-hop soul.
According to Gambino’s website, the new version of the album, spread across two 45 RPM 12″ vinyl discs, will include a poster and a digital download.
Delivery of the disc is due at a TBD time in 2017, and “vinyl pricing subject to change as package content is finalised”.
While we wait to figure out the exact nature of Gambino’s mysterious new VR record, you can download his new iPhone and Android app Pharos Earth, which works with mobile virtual reality headsets to offer an “immersive experience” of fresh single and disc opener Me And Your Mama.
Awaken, My Love! is out tomorrow, Friday 2nd December.
