Courtney Barnett Admits She Doesn’t Know Who Her Fellow Grammy Nominees Are

Love her or loathe her, you’ve gotta hand it to Courtney Barnett: fame hasn’t stopped her from being Courtney Barnett.

The Melbourne troubadour was recently nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best New Artist category, and sat down with Billboard to chat about the nod.

But instead of all the usual schtick that Grammy nominees come out with, i.e. “OMG It’s such an honour just to be nominated in the same category as so many talented people!”

Barnett was her usual, laconic, blasé self, revealing that she doesn’t really give two hoots about the Grammys, and has no idea who any of her fellow nominees are, even.

Calling her own nomination “far-fetched”, she said:
“I’m just not that interested in… You just live in your own little bubble, like, or I do anyway. So I don’t know anything about, like, electronic music or anything – you know? I don’t know much about anything really. I don’t really follow that much. I’ve found a couple of albums or artists I like, but really I just do my own thing — I’m not so concerned about what everyone else is doing and what the trend is.”

James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly and Megan Trainor represent Barnett’s main competition for the Best New Artist gong.

“Yeah, I don’t know who they are,” she admitted (which I guess means Barnett is not All About That Bass).

Then, when asked if she plans to listen to any of their music in the lead-up to the awards, Barndawgs also responded with zero BS:

“I probably won’t. I listen to music when my friends recommend it to me, I don’t often just go out and buy a record because it was in a magazine or it was on a list or something. So, yeah, I probably won’t. I feel like there’s so much music in the world that I haven’t listened to yet that I want to listen to.”

The 58th annual Grammy Awards will air live on February 15th, 2016 in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Barnett has recently been named among the world’s most blogged-about artists of 2015, triple j’s most played artists of 2015 and has already nabbed a whole bunch of Australian awards.

Check out some of the artists she has actually listened to (and voted for in the triple j Hottest 100) here.
