Courtney Love is not happy about the use of Nirvana’s hit track Smells Like Teen Spirit in the 2011 Muppets Movie. She told TMZ that Kermit The Frog and co “raped” the memory of her late husband Kurt Cobain and that she did not approve the use of the track in the movie.
According to Love she has the absolute power to approve or deny the use of Nirvana music for commercial purposes, and she never gave the OK for the track to be used in the movie.
However, there is a whole other side to this story that Love seems to have blanked out. TMZ reports that Love sold off half of her rights to Cobain’s music to a company called Primary Wave Music, giving them the exclusive right to distribute Nirvana’s entire catalogue.
The Muppets Movie had the approval of Primary Wave Music along with the approval of the other two Nirvana members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.
On top of all of this, apparently Love also gets a chunk of profits from songs in the catalogue, so she should be getting a nice little chunk of Muppets’ cash.
