Attention mofos: Tasmania’s Dark Mofo festival is set to return this June, and it has secured a one-year funding agreement with the State Government to keep the dark ~vibes~ flowing.
As per usual, Dark Mofo 2016 will take place around Tassie’s winter solstice, with dates running from 10th to 21st June this year. The festival will also be returning to spaces across Hobart, including its waterfront from Salamanca Place to the industrial art playground ‘Dark Park’ at Macquarie Point.
Dark Mofo’s Winter Feast is returning, of course, and is going down at Princes Wharf One from 15th to 19th June. The annual nude solstice swim isn’t going anywhere either, and will see hundreds of brave souls take to the water at precisely 7:42am on Tuesday, 21st June.
Dark Mofo Creative Director Leigh Carmichael says he’s seen an “unprecedented commitment to cultural activity” in Tasmania from the State Government, the Tourism, Hospitality and Events Minister and Premier Will Hodgman. That said, the event has only secured a one year funding agreement.
“While the current agreement is for one year, we are working very closely with the State Government, Events Tasmania and Tourism Tasmania on a longer term vision for the festival,” Mr Carmichael says.
“The cultural and creative industries are extremely important economically, but maybe above all, they make Tasmania a great place to live and work; they enrich our lives, challenge us and ultimately define who we are.
“We are very honoured with how the community has embraced this festival, and we are striving for it to become a hallmark in the Australian cultural calendar.”
In the last three years, Dark Mofo has grown so much that it hold 270,000 attendances at events across 10 nights in 2015, and has featured performances by innovators like Antony and the Johnsons, Ryoji Ikeda, Sunn O))) and Martha Wainwright in the past.
Dark Mofo’s 2016 program will be announced in April. Until then, relieve last year’s event below, along with the festival’s 2016 dates.
