After taking a short breather in 2024 (AKA the most cursed year for Australian festivals since COVID) Tassie’s beloved alternative bash Dark Mofo is back with a devilish, nude-swimming vengeance this year, just unveiling a stacked music lineup for its big comeback.
This year’s instalment will be headlined by Portishead singer Beth Gibbons, who tops a bill that also packs 19 Australian-exclusive music performances, including from US rap and R&B queen Tierra Whack, Darkwave modern torchbearers Cold Cave, US prog metallers Baroness and loads more.
“Dark Mofo is back”
Dark Mofo 2025 will take place from Thursday, 5th June to Sunday, 15th June 2025 across Nipaluna/Hobart with an ambitious art and music program, alongside all your fave time-honoured rituals including Winter Feast, the Ogoh-Ogoh, Night Mass and the Nude Solstice Swim, which will be baring all on Saturday, 21st June.
“Dark Mofo is back,” Artistic Director Chris Twite said in a press statement. “Once again we will bathe the city in red, filling it with art and taking over disused and hidden spaces all across Nipaluna/Hobart. Night Mass—the late-night labyrinth of revelry—will carve new paths through the city and a host of Australian-exclusive artists from around the world will storm our stages.”
The midwinter festival will commandeer deconsecrated churches, rooftops, basements, bars, bank vaults and the shores of River Derwent. Dark Mofo will also stretch its tentacles to a theatre in Launceston and the planetarium in Ulverstone.
“It feels incredible to bring so many boundary pushing artists to Tasmania in 2025 for the fullscale return of Dark Mofo,” adds Twite.
