David Bowie Gets Posthumous 2016 Mercury Prize Nomination For ‘Blackstar’

UPDATE 16/09/16: Skepta has taken up the top prize for his album Konnichiwa.

ORIGINAL STORY: The 2016 Mercury Prize shortlist is in, with a dozen worthy UK acts in the running for this year’s big gong.

Among them is a posthumous nod for departed legend David Bowie and his final album, Blackstar.

While other big names on the list include Skepta, The 1975, Bat For Lashes, Savages and Radiohead for A Moon Shaped Pool.

The list is rounded out by up-and-comers Anohni, Jamie Woon, Kano, Laura Mvula, Michael Kiwanuka and The Comet Is Coming.

The annual prize recognises the best record released by a British or Irish artist, and was taken out last year by dark horse former busker Benjamin Clementine for his album At Least For Nowwhich beat out tough competition from Florence + The Machine, Aphex Twin, Wolf Alice and more.

This year’s ceremony will be held on September 15th.
