Through a series of songs written by David Byrne, with musical contributions from Fatboy Slim, ‘Here Lies Love’ is a song cycle that presents the story of Imelda Marcos, the wife of late Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos. It examines events in her life – from a childhood spent in poverty, rise to becoming the nation’s most powerful woman, and her ultimate departure from the palace in 1986.
When asked why he chose such a controversial subject matter, Byrne said:
“I guess I liked her extreme feistiness. And she was tough-smart. Especially after she took over the running of Manila. For me the question was, should I celebrate someone who’s worthy instead of someone who’s really not? That’s a tough one because it’s always harder to write about a good person.”
The 2 CD set, performed by an all-star cast of vocalists including Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos, Santigold, Sia and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine will be available April 9.
