In a bizarre melding of worlds, the creator of a parody Seinfeld twitter account has launched a new online video game where players taking either the role of Jerry Seinfeld or Cosmo Kramer attempt to throw mints into an open surgery wound, while Vampire Weekend‘s Ezra Koenig sings an a cappella version of the show’s famed theme song. Got that?
The game was spawned by Jason Richards, the man behind the surrealist Twitter handle @Seinfeld2000, which was in turn inspired by @SeinfeldToday, a separate account that explores modern day Seinfeld plot-lines, offering stories wherein the characters use Facebook, OkCupid, Instagram and smoke e-cigarettes.
@Seinfeld2000 on the other hand, takes that concept and turns it on its head, providing a more surreal approach to the fictional Seinfeld present. Richards employs intentional misspellings of character names, poor grammar, photoshops the cast into contemporary situations and recasts phrases and plots from Seinfeld with current news and trends. Recently Jesus burst into the room, Kramer style, in the form of Jared Leto.
Taking his vision to an even more surreal level, as The New York Times reports, Richards has partnered with New Zealand video game designer Pippin Barr to create The Junior Mint, a game based on the 1993 Seinfeld episode of the same name.
The goal of the game is fairly simple. Players must drop as many Junior Mints as possible into the surgery patient below, whilst avoiding obstructing Seinfeld characters and Miley Cyrus on, you guessed it, a wrecking ball. It was inspired by a Seinfeld episode in which Kramer did basically the same thing, minus the Miley cameo. The game’s soundtrack is an a looped version of the Seinfeld theme by Koenig.
The Times notes, Richards and Koenig share a history, as the character of @Seinfeld2000 interviewed Koenig for Vice‘s music site Noisey, in which the Vampire Weekend frontman recalls how @Seinfeld2000 “revolutionised the way I thought about music”.
