Flume Dominates ARIA Award Winners For 2016

Flume has made the 30th annual ARIA Awards his bitch, bagging a grand total of eight pointy statues over the course of the Australian music industry’s night of nights.

The beatwizard was already off to a powerful start before the ceremony even started, snagging three gongs for ‘Producer of the Year’, ‘Engineer of the Year’ and ‘Best Cover Art’ for his Skin LP.

But his hot form continued long after hosts The Veronicas kicked off the official proceedings, going on to pocket another five of a massive eight more nods, tasting sweet victory in the ‘Best Dance Release’, ‘Best Pop Release’, ‘Best Independent Release’ and ‘Best Male Artist’ categories, on top of bagging the big one — ‘Album Of The Year’ for Skin.

Apart from going on an award-winning spree, the artist otherwise known as Harley Streten was also responsible for plenty of other big #ARIAS2016 moments, making some waves by using one of his many acceptance speeches to trash Sydney’s lockout laws and also treating fans to a stellar performance of his Skin hit Never Be Like You with guest vocalist Kai.

Apart from Flume, ARIA’s debutant Troye Sivan and Mansfield rockers Violent Soho also cleaned house, the former snapping up two awards in the People’s Choice category for ‘Best Video’ (YOUTH – Acoustic) and ‘Apple Song Of The Year’ (also for YOUTH) while the Soho boys also took home two gongs in the ‘Best Group’ and ‘Best Rock Album’ category for 2016’s WACO LP.

But the lads were almost a no-show for their second ARIA win of the evening, apparently because they were off smashing piss when the award got announced.

Elsewhere, some heavy music fans were a bit confused and/or pissed that garage/psych act King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard won in the ‘Hard Rock/Heavy Metal’ category, beating out much heavier acts including Parkway Drive, Hellions, Twelve Foot Ninja and The Amity Affliction.

While Sia wasn’t around to accept her ‘Best Female Artist’ award, sending LGBTIQ activist Angie Greene — who was sporting a pro-marriage equality T-shirt — to claim the trophy on her behalf:

Earlier in the night, the ‘Best Urban’ category was taken out by Drapht, ‘Best Adult Alternative’ went to Sarah Blasko and Montaigne snapped up the statue for ‘Breakthrough Artist’.

Congrats on another stellar year of Aussie music, everyone. Give yourselves a nice pat on the back and catch the full list of #ARIA2016 Award winners below.
