Flying Lotus: ‘I’m Listening To My New Album Right Now’

30-year-old Steven Ellison, better known to the world as experimental, musical cosmonaut Flying Lotus, has refused to let his cemented position as one of the world’s most prolific producers erode, telling fans during a recent Twitter Q&A that the next Flying Lotus album is ready for mixing.

During the online Q&A session, Ellison dropped details about his fifth album under the Flying Lotus moniker, telling one fan interested to know if the follow-up to 2012’s Until the Quiet Comes would be ready for an early or late 2014 release, “I’m looking at a tracklist. Almost ready for mixing.”

After further prodding regarding the status of new Flying Lotus material, Ellison revealed to a fan that an album is “almost” completed and that he’s “Listening to it now.” The album will also reportedly have Ellison performing under his rap soubriquet Captain Murphy “all over it.”

The album will have more of a jazz vibe, with Ellison saying he imagines it will be “kind of jarring at first,” and that his verse from Childish Gambino’s short film Clapping For The Wrong Reasons may make an appearance. Ellison also mentioned that he already has a title in mind for the LP.

Regarding extracurricular projects, Ellison revealed that the release of his collaboration with Schoolboy Q is pending the latter’s whims, that he will “probably” appear at SXSW 2014, his Herbie Hancock collaboration is “what’s next,” and that he is presently involved in scoring a film.
