“It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep,” solicitors on behalf of the family said in a press statement.

“A further statement will be provided in the coming days.”

Green founded the band alongside Mick Fleetwood in 1967, after leaving John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. Green stayed with the band for three years, releasing three albums – Fleetwood MacMr. Wonderful and Then Play On.

In 1970, Green left the band after alleged issues with drugs and his mental health. Green was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, spending time in hospital due to the illness.

Green was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1998 for his work with the band. He was inducted alongside other past and current members Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie, Christine McVie, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer.

Rest In Peace, Peter Green.
