Free Streaming Track: Ernest Ellis – “Heading For The Cold”

Check out the new single from Ernest Ellis from the album “Hunting”, due out in 2010.

Ernest Ellis will be supporting Jamie T on his run of dates next week, and will also be performing at the Coaster Festival.

When it came time to write his debut album ernest ellis bunkered down by himself in a log cabin in the Blue Mountains for a cold but productive month-long writing session. ‘Heading For The Cold ’ was the first song to emerge and is the first single from the debut album, “Hunting”.

“It felt like I had left the city and was literally heading for the cold both mentally and physically. It was almost like I was preparing myself for a storm or a massive flood or something like that. That’s how this song really came to be, I had set out to write an album that represented continuity and a particular state of mind.”

‘Heading For The Cold’ starts with sparse instrumentation, and percussive handclaps that propel the track forward. The relaxed guitar line is both ethereal and infectious, but it’s the swelling vocal that captures your attention as it declares the song’s title in an almost celebratory tone.

Much like the writing session for the album, the recording process also led ernest to some remote locations. With mobile recording studio safely loaded on board ernest and good friend engineer/producer Tim Carr set off to a remote property outside of Orange in NSW. They tracked the majority of the album there before heading off to the Blue Mountains and Port Macquarie before completing the recordings in the more conventional surrounds of Studios’ 301 in Sydney. Scott Horscroft then mixed the album at BJB studios in Sydney.

“It was such an exciting process making this record. We took our time with it and it felt like we crossed the entire country to get it done, but really it felt like the only way I could have recorded these songs and done them justice.”

ernest ellis first grabbed attention with his single ‘Bad Blood’, which was picked up by triple j and community stations, and has since toured with the likes of Evan Dando and The Paper Scissors. September will see him on the road again playing the Coaster Festival and supporting Jamie T on his sold out tour of Australia.

The single featuring ‘Heading for the Cold’ plus ‘Time Takes Its Toll’ is due out on September 28th. The debut album, ‘Hunting’ is due out in early 2010.
