Gingerfest To Honour Australian Punk Identity

Some of Australia’s most renowned punk and rock bands have joined forces for the inaugural Gingerfest. Featuring 28 Days, Bagster, Totally Unicorn, Born Lion, Clowns, Super Best Friends, and more, this special fundraising event will take over The Factory Theatre in Sydney on Saturday, 6th December.

Gingerfest is an all-day event to raise money for Vision Australia, in memory of late Canberra resident Nicholas Sofer-Schreiber, known to friends in the Australian punk rock scene as ‘The Ginger Ninja’. Nicholas, who was tragically murdered last year, was a beloved stalwart of the Canberra punk community.

News of Nicholas’ death was met with an outpouring of condolences from bands both at home and abroad. US outfit Strung Out took to Facebook to pen a tribute to Nicholas, writing, “The ‘Ginger Ninja’ was such a nice humble kind person… He traveled all over to come see us play and all 5 of us knew him.”

“The Ginger Ninja was more than just a friend to us, he was family, he was the heart and soul of our little music community. His legacy will live on,” says Gingerfest co-curator Luke Griffis. “The best way we thought to remember would be just this… Celebrating his life with the thing he loved the most; music.”

The quality of the first-ever annual Gingerfest lineup, which also features South Australian punk rockers Hightime, Canberra veterans Revellers, and a special acoustic performance from Lindsay ‘The Doctor’ McDougall, is testament to the impact Nicholas Sofer-Schreiber has on the Australian punk rock community. UPDATE 01/10/14: Gingerfest 2014 has released a second artist lineup, adding eight new punk groups to the bill, including Anchors, Chris Duke & The Royals, The Decline and Steel City All Stars. View the updated lineup below.
