Here’s Who’s Currently Predicted To Win This Year’s Triple J Hottest 100

The team of professional surprise-spoilers at dedicated triple j Hottest 100 prediction website 100 Warm Tunas have unveiled their early predictions for the songs most likely to crack this year’s countdown.

The brainchild of Sydney-based software engineer Nick Whyte, 100 Warm Tunas uses a specially formulated algorithm to trawl social media and tally all the votes shared for each eligible track. According to the ABC, since launching in 2016, 100 Warm Tunas has been right about the countdown’s number one song 67% of the time. And this time around, the website’s bean counter has tipped a bit of a curveball tune to top the Hottest 100 of 2023:

boygenius – ‘Not Strong Enough’

American indie supergroup boygenius are currently at pole position in the website’s initial top 50 most-voted-for songs, with their 2023 single ‘Not Strong Enough’ racking up an 18% share of the 13,100 votes sampled thus far.

Rounding out the predicted top 5, we have Perth pop superstar Troye Sivan sitting at number 2 with ‘Rush’, Skrillex, Fred again.. and Flowdan with their godzilla collab ‘Rumble’ currently in third place, homegrown hero Genesis Owusu at number four with ‘Leaving The Light’ and Melbourne singer-songwriter Angie McMahon in fifth position with ‘Letting Go’.

According to 100 Warm Tunas, Troye Sivan and Teenage Dads could be up for multiple entries in this year’s Hottest 100, with two songs apiece figuring so far into the predicted top 50. Meanwhile, two Like A Version covers are also tipped to get up. One belongs to the aforementioned Teenage Dads, with their cover of The Buggles’ ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ tipped to hit the countdown at #38, while Slowly Slowly‘s cover of blink-182’s ‘I Miss You’ is currently in 17th position on the voting board.

Of course, the race is far from over, with voting in triple j‘s Hottest 100 of 2023 open until 5pm AEDT on Monday, 22nd January and thousands upon thousands of votes still to be submitted.

The countdown will then be broadcast live around the world on Saturday, 27th January, with the Hottest 200 of 2023 (i.e. songs 200-101) to follow on Sunday, 28th January.

The following weekend, triple j’s sibling station Double J will turn back the clock to count down the Hottest 100 of 2003. That’s happening on Saturday, 3rd February. Spoiler alert: recent ARIA Hall of Fame inductees Jet topped that year’s countdown with ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’, pipping Outkast’s ‘Hey Ya!’ (#2) and The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’ (#3).

Flume’s ‘Say Nothing’ featuring MAY-A topped the Hottest 100 of 2022, just as 100 Warm Tuna’s predicted.

You can catch the site’s early predictions for the top 50 of triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2023 down below.
